Two Saturday Class Lesson Plans:

Friendship & Relationships (K)

Empathy & Perspective (3rd)

IPTS Standard 2 - Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge - The competent teacher has an in-depth understanding of content-area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teachers create meaningful learning experiences for each student based on interactions among content areas and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.
IPTS Standard 8- Collaborative Relationships - The competent teacher builds and maintains collaborative relationships to foster cognitive, linguistic, physical, social, and emotional development. This teacher works as a team with professional colleagues, students, parents or guardians, and community members.

Description of each plan: Our Kindergarten lesson is about making ceramic, painted charms out of clay to make a class garland representing friendships and relationships inside and outside the classroom. We learned about what friendships mean to us, clay techniques, painting tips, four new artists (Brittany Harris, Kyle Scott Lee, Kevin Snipes, and Rafael Lopez), read "Just Ask" by Sonia Sotomayor, and assembled our class garland (seen in the image to the right).

Our Third Grade lesson is a play on deception on perspective using red studio lights to wash out the color of our students' coloring supplies while drawing our class still life keeping in mind perspective and empathy. We read "A Little Spot of Empathy" by Diane Alber as a class, learned about four new artists ( Julian Beever, Ana Valdez, Tang Yua Hoong, and Octavio Ocampo), practiced negative and positive space, and presented to parents their still lives under red light.

Rationale for each plan: For our Kindergarten Lesson, we planned this lesson to be an easy and an introduction to clay revolving the idea of friendships and relationships in the classroom.

As for our Third Grade lesson, we wanted to challenge our student's perception with the red studio lights and ask ourselves what we thought we saw versus what they actually drew through keeping empathy and perspective in mind throughout the lesson.

Evidence: Photos can be seen below in the collage and carousel to the right of our teacher examples, student examples, and features of our Kindergarten in-process "Walk and Talk" as well as our final Third Grade "Walk and Talk".

IPTS Standard 4 - Learning Environment - The competent teacher structures a safe and healthy learning environment that facilitates cultural and linguistic responsiveness, emotional well-being, self-efficacy, positive social interaction, mutual respect, active engagement, academic risk-taking, self-motivation, and personal goal setting. This includes a virtual environment and any learning aids used within a Google Drive.
7D: understands how to organize the instructional environment to maximize students’ learning.

Description: For our Kindergarten setup, we worked in a small yet cozy room provided in Illinois State's Center of Visual Arts. Considering we had one student for our Kindergarten class, we kept it minimal in terms of tables and set up. Things that stayed consistent in the first three weeks with our Kindergarten room was: computer station to the front, left of the room, projector screen in the center, front of the room, and to the right wall was our supply table. We had posters of vocabulary words of the day and artwork examples we thought fit with our goals of the day.

For Lesson Day One, we had set up two long tables set next to each other in the center of the room close to the front of the projector screen provided for our student to be able to see the screen and have space to move around and work easily later in the lesson time. For Lesson Day Two, we moved the two long tables to make a big square in the center of the room. With this, we thought it would make it easy to spread supplies in the center and when it came time to use that supplies, we would ask and pass the supplies around. For Lesson Day Three, we returned to setting up the long tables next to each other to create a long line for assembling our class garland.

As for Third Grade, we kept our set up the same for both Lesson Days One and Two. We just down the hall from our previous room with Kindergarten in Illinois State's Center of Visual Arts. Our lesson revolve around a still life set up, so we had six drawing desks around the still life. A computer desk stayed in it's place to the farthest left corner on the wall where our projector displayed our "Artist and Artwork" presentation. Two or three studio lights with red cellophane were propped up on left over tables to have the red light shown directly on the still life. One studio light was set up on the farthest wall of the classroom (near the computer desk) and the other studio light was set on the wall nearest to the entrance/door of the classroom. Below the projected presentation, we had vocabulary posters and our teacher examples displayed for students to refer to through our lesson time.

Rationale: We kept in mind simplicity and consistency for our classrooms to keep a familiar environment for our students. Considering the lesson days goals, our classroom setup stayed the same to continue the routine of the lesson plan. Our students knew where to sit and were ready to get started.

Evidence: Photos can be seen in the collage below and the carousel to the right of our classroom setup for Kindergarten (Weeks 1-3) and Third Grade (Weeks 4-5).

Description/Rationale: This semester, I took the chance to go to two Artist Lectures at the University Galleries in the beginning of the semester. I went in to listen and experience Li-Ming Hu's artist lecture on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 and Flo Fitzgerald-Allsopp's artist lecture on Wednesday, September 14, 2022.

Evidence: Photos shown below of Flo Fitzgerald-Allsopp's artist lecture and my notes of Li-Ming Hu's artist lecture.

Description/Rationale: To support my peers, I went to this semester's MFA Reviews on Wednesday, November 16, 2022. I visited Kitty Davies' contour drawings and artist talk as well as Ilse Miller's paintings and artist talk. MFA reviews were held in the new Julian Hall at Illinois State University.

Evidence: Photos shown below of Kitty Davies' MFA review along with Ilse Miller's MFA review.

Description/Rationale: As for myself, I was commissioned to paint another baptism candle in September 2022. It was a sweet homage to St. Anne and St. Mary, and together with my friend who commissioned the candle, we collaborated in the name sticker I like to put on the back to remember this special moment for the family.

Evidence: Photos shown below of the candle.

Description/Rationale: Along with other peers in the Art Education department, I participated in the small shape art exhibition held in the bulletin in Illinois State's Central of Visual Art.

Evidence: Photos shown below of my work (the Ginkgo Tree behind the CVA in the midst of the autumn season in November 2022) and my peers' work.
