Art 309 Spring

Professional Art Education Sequence, Elementary

Clinical Hours: 20.00

HOIC Lesson:
Miniature
Meaningful Memorable Places

(High School Level)

Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 3 - Planning for Differentiated Instruction – The competent teacher plans and designs instruction based on content area knowledge, diverse student characteristics, student performance data, curriculum goals, and the community context. The teacher plans for ongoing student growth and achievement.

Description: Think of your favorite place: What does it look like? Who lives there? What memories are attached to it? Make a miniature place (smaller than five inches) out of mixed media of your choice. We will be able to use assorted materials (canvas & paint, paper and glue, model magic) to build one 2D or 3D building or environment that is meaningful or memorable to them. We will look at artists such as Adia Millett, Ana Serrano, Sarah Choo Jing, and Pepon Osorio to get inspired on how to represent your miniature, memorable place.

Rationale: We wanted to create a lesson plan based a big idea that anyone could relate to. Everyone has a special place they resort to whether it's a physical space or imaginative. We. also, wanted to give student a lot of choice in terms of media (collaging, using model magic, painting, or all of the above).

(Middle School Level)

Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 5 - Instructional Delivery – The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.

Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 7 - Assessment – The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.

Description: We will talk about what “places” mean to them whether it's a physical space, an imaginative space, or a bit of both. Then we look at our key artists (Faith Ringgold, Ben Venom) and observe their interpretation of places, discuss their art through the conceptual frameworks (structural, cultural, and compare and contrast), then use mind maps and brainstorm worksheets to come up with their own ideas. We will also have a brief discussion on fast fashion and collaborate ideas to reduce the effects of fast fashion by bringing in materials of our own (old t-shirts, ribbons, fabrics, etc) to use for our “meaningful, memorable” place project. We will go over the basics of value, composition, and arrangement to be able to cut and paste fabric together and then sew our pieces together. Students will also have the option to use paint or fabric markers to add extra details. Finally, we will put the 5x5 pieces together to create a class quilt.

Rationale: I wanted to create a lesson that is open ended (such as places), interdisciplinary with current issues such as fast fashion in relation to textiles and our key artists (Faith Ringgold & Ben Venom). Also, I wanted to create a sense of community by including a collaborative activity, class discussion, and gallery walk into my lesson.

Unit Lesson Plan:
Literacy Lesson

(formative assessment)

Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 6 - Reading, Writing, and Oral Communication – The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.

Description: This formative assessment literacy lesson is a Jamboard for students to click through and practice how to "Look, Describe, Think, & Connect like an Artist". Specifically, we looking at Faith Ringgold's "Tar Beach #2". Students will be asked to use the post-it notes to tag their observations (look), their ideas (describe), their thoughts (think), and share their experiences (connect) as they combine their notes from the previous slides in three cohesive sentences.

Rationale: This activity give students the chance to breakdown a piece of art by making observations about the subject matter, describe what they see in the piece (with descriptive adjectives), make inferences of the meaning/purpose behind the piece, and make connections with their own life and experiences to prepare writing about their own art in the same way.

Teaching
Philosophy

7M: articulates a logical rationale for the role of the visual arts in the school curriculum, including philosophical and social foundations for visual arts education.

Description: As an educator, I desire to create an equitable classroom that allows for students to reach their full potential as artists and humans and provide resources that reflect them through figures with disabilities, similar and different racial, ethnic, and sexual orientation backgrounds, and share artists near and far in our community. I believe the purpose of education is to open doors to opportunities of discovery and identity as well as build creative minds and critical/logical thinkers.

Rationale: I strive to be a well rounded teacher who is wiling to learn as much from my students as they do from me.

PAL 1's

Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 9 - Professionalism, Leadership, and Advocacy – The competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism; provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession.

Description(s): This February (26), I took the chance to visit Salvador Dali's "The Image Disappears" curated by the Institute of Art in Chicago with my parents and sister (their first time going). It was a very sweet experience to see and talk with my family their opinion, thoughts, and ideas behind the art that we saw. It was also exciting to go to the National Museum of Mexican Art at Pilsen/ Chicago in March (24); to see my culture represented in an array of local and global art was a beautiful experience to feel. It ignited new ideas for my art and how I want to continue fill up space in the art world. Another major event I attended was the NAEA (National Art Education Association) Conference at San Antonio Texas in early April (12-15).

Evidence: Check out my google folder attached below & my painting portfolio for more photos.

Rationale(s): For these events, it was all about taking my parents and sister to places they've never been and experience the art world specifically (with the excuse it was for class). Also, it these events are a chance to get out of my comfort zone and get a chance to meet other art educator who are in the field, who identify like me (a minority art educator), learn ways to manage my class, and make art class purposeful & fun.

PAL 2's

Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 9 - Professionalism, Leadership, and Advocacy – The competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism; provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession.
7N: advances his or her knowledge of current developments in the field by participating in professional development activities (e.g., coursework, professional organizations, and workshops).

Description(s): This semester I had the privilege of participating in two art exhibitions: "All About Art Ed" Senior Art Education Exhibition curated by my peers in my Art 309 Class, and the Student Annual Exhibition 2023. In both shows, my paintings "En Mi Pueblito Mio" and "Donde Se Fueron, Donde Estaran" were both accepted and exhibited in January 24-February 3 at the Julian Hall and April 12-May 7 at the University Galleries in Normal, IL.

Evidence: Check out my google folder attached below as well as my paint portfolio for more information.

Rationale(s): These two exhibitions were a privilege as a class to arrange and to participate in. As a class, we collaborated the idea, the space, and encouragement for our Senior Art Exhibition. I hope it is an event that continues on for the art education sequence. As well as the Student Annual, it's an annual event that I've been participating in since 2021 and I plan to continue the coming spring.
